UPDATE: July 20 - 22 Blog

Last weekend the Basketball Alberta Midget Girls headed west to Coquitlam to compete in their final exhibition tournament of the summer. Before games began the team participated in a team building exercise to help instill the importance of support for one another on the court. The exercise proved to be helpful as the girls brought more team energy and support to the tournament than they have all season. In the first day of the tournament Team Alberta defeated the Vancouver Aces and lost a close game to a strong Excel U17’s.  On Sunday, Team Alberta took on Basketball B.C. U15 Red team for their final game and defeated them 37-28. The final game of the tournament was a great way to finish off exhibition play, as it was the girls’ best performance all season in terms of energy and consistency.

The next two weeks will be spent in Edmonton fine tuning details and cleaning up systems in preparation for the National Tournament held in Fredericton next month. The girls’ look to carry the momentum gained this past weekend into the last set of practices before the national tournament.

The team is looking forward to practicing hard and finishing the season with a strong showing at Nationals.

UPDATE: July 4 - 15 Blog

The Basketball Alberta Midget girls have been a busy group the past couple of weekends participating in two exhibition tournaments. The first tournament was a local Calgary tournament where the girls played their first official games together. In four games, the girls went 2-2 overall, beating Tsuu T’ina Nation and the Calgary Storm U15’s. The team played in the tournament final versus the Calgary Storm U17’s and lost a competitive final. The tournament provided the girls with an opportunity to play against other competition in the province, and taught them the importance of playing games with intensity and energy.

The following weekend and after a week of practicing and cleaning up Offensive and Defensive systems, the Midget girls were back on the road to Regina to participate in their second exhibition tournament. This tournament provided the first competition for the girls against other provincial teams in the country. Again the result of the weekend was 2-2, beating Team Saskatchewan twice (including a gutsy, come from behind win in the “Egg McMuffin Game”) and dropping two games to a medal-contending Team Manitoba. Despite losing two games, the girls were able to identify their areas of strengths and weaknesses and maintain a positive attitude and a willingness to continue to work to improve.

This weekend the team travels west to New Westminister, BC to compete in the “Best in the West” tournament. Eager to learn from the past two tournaments the girls look to bring energy, focus, and intensity into the weekend and build confidence and momentum heading into the national tournament where they will compete against defending National Champions Ontario in the first round.

The U15 Midget Girls would also like to extend a good-luck to the Canadian Senior Women’s Basketball team that competes in the Olympics in the upcoming weeks.

Go Canada Go!!!
