UPDATE: July 20 Blog

Since our first week of training camp in Edmonton, we have ramped up our intensity and work ethic a great amount. We are getting better at supporting our teammates during the good and bad times. Lately, we have been working on shortening lapses during training and keeping our tempo up. Each day of training, the coaches read us an inspirational quote. We use this “thought of the day” as a focus point for that day’s practices.

In these past few weeks, each individual has been contributing their own piece to our puzzle.

Mack’s post defence has been great. Being 14 and the youngest on the team, she’s been really aggressive and brought a lot to her team.

Kenz has been dominant in attacking the basket and beating the defence with her speed.

Emily has great composure on the floor when being pressured by defence. As a point guard she has really stepped up.

Kacie brings high intensity all the time and is great at breaking down defence to get to the rim. She is always consistent in crashing the boards.

Courtney is a strong player who makes smart decisions. She is fearless when attacking the basket.

Yasmene has been pushing herself hard everyday while bringing physicality to the court.

Hayli is a strong vocal leader on the court, and poses as an offensive threat with both jumpshots and lay ups.

Shenelle is a hard working, well-rounded player. She makes strong moves to the basket and is a supportive team mate.

Chanece, although injured right now, is a confident ball handler and finds her way to the rim offensively.

Brian brings a positive attitude and is always physical while boxing out and rebounding. She has one hell of a snort that never fails to crack everybody up.

Bri is as graceful as a gazelle. She is a dominant force on offence and weaves her way through defenders.

Jenna brings her high energy and enthusiasm to the team. She’s an extremely hard worker and is always ready to compete.

Mariah dedicates herself to being aggressive at all times, she is a great rebounder and fights hard during every possession.

Paige is strong offensively and defensively, her explosive moves challenge her opponents during one on one battles.

Our first team bonding experience was an afternoon at the Hinchey’s house in Edmonton. Briana Carlyon’s group took the win in a competition with their remake of the popular song “Sexy and I Know It”. Their song was appropriately titled “Farmer and I Grow It”.

We then played a difficult mind game called scissors, where Chanece, Yas, Mariah, and Paige struggled a little too much…

During our Lethbridge training camp we spent a day at Park Lake. Jenna flirted her way into using the park officer, Stanley, as a prop in her groups skit. Although her efforts were admirable, Briana C’s group pulled away with another win with their version of a Toddlers and Tiaras TV episode. We spent the evening at Erin’s house and watched Drew’s favourite show about mermaids called “H2O: Just Add Water”. Also, as a team we came to a consensus about who we want to be. Our key values are centered around being hard working, communicative, and intense.

At the Tri-Prov tournament in Regina, we played two high intensity games against Manitoba and Saskatchewan. In our Lakeland match, our level of play was not where we wanted it to be. However, it helped prepare us for nationals and reveal what we needed to work on. All in all, we improved over the weekend. In the hotel, we created our own fashion show by dressing four girls in newspaper dresses. Shout out to all of our models: Yasmene as “Lady Yaya”, Emily as “Tina Triangle”, Kacie as a beautiful bride, and Kenzie as an origami goddess.
