UPDATE: July 17 - Blog

The Juvenile Men's Team began training camp July 9 in Calgary. As the players traveling from out of town settled in to their billet family homes, the coaching staff was hard at work planning the practice sessions, weight training, exhibition game, and team building for the week ahead. Chestermere High was the host gym for the week of practice. With hard work and concentration from all the team began to really come together near the end of the week.

As a reward for the hard work the coaching staff gave the players the afternoon session on Wednesday off to rest and spend some time with new friends and teammates. A majority of the players chose to take in a movie at Chinook Theatre in Calgary. While Coach Erhayat, Eric, and Mitch saw Spiderman in IMAX (and loved it!), Otas, Joey, Malik, Cam, Jaiden, Colton, Darian, Matt, and Lincoln saw Savages. Apparently a good movie can be ruined by not one, but two crappy endings. Either way it was a nice way to spend an evening recharging some energy.

On Friday evening Coach Shawnee Harle attend practice to give some outside insight to players and coaches in preparation for Nationals and the team's first exhibition game against the University of Calgary Dinos. After an extensive debriefing session with the coaching staff and some invaluable insight for the players the team was ready for their first on court competition of the summer.

Saturday morning saw the boys hit the floor for a 9 AM tip with the Dinos. Although the score did not end in Team Alberta's favor, many positives shone through. We would like to thank the Dinos for allowing us to use their facilities and taking the time to come help us prepare for Nationals. Another huge thanks to Coach Harle who's encouragements and insight will be important to our success through the summer.

We finished the week with a 6 hour team building session competition. Organized by Lynn Ross and Rhonda Ozcan the boys had to perform to several challenges dealing with mental toughness, teamwork, communication, and athleticism, ending in a scavenger hunt and an ultimate winner. The highlight of the day was an eating challenge that saw the boys eat saltine crackers (this did not end well for Malik!!), dry noodles (a little Point Guard Pasta for Barento and Adonis), veggie dogs (Cam and Darian have a new appreciation for the "meat" in real hot dogs now), a bag of marshmellows (Wilo and Matt proved "they the best"!!), an unpeeled orange with no hands (Jaiden was ballzy, but Colton ate the rind like a champ!), and finally a liter of tonic water (Joey thought he was fast until Lincoln chugged it in 5 seconds though this good Mormon boy has never seen alcohol in his life). Wilo was crowned champion after winning all the competitions. Thanks Lynn and Rhonda for organizing and the pasta dinner after (which Adonis and Barneto thought was some kind of sick joke).

A final thank you to all the billet families for all their work during the week making sure everyone was fed and had a comfortable place to sleep.

Stay tuned for more next week as the team travels to Edmonton to train at Harry Ainlay and compete against the University of Alberta and Grant MacEwan.
