UPDATE: July 19 Blog
The Team Alberta U16 girls program finished up a busy first weekend of competition at the Tri-Prov Tournament in Regina Sk. First up for the Alberta Squad was Team Sask U16. Although the score was even throughout much of the first half, Team Saskatchewan was able to take a convincing win from Alberta, showing off a well-oiled offensive/defensive system. The second game of the weekend was against a very strong U of R, JR Cougars team. The Alberta team showed a more disciplined offense and great team improvements but lost by 6 pts to the Cougars. The third game of the weekend was against Team Manitoba U17’s who were playing very good basketball all weekend. Team Alberta put up a great fight and played an excellent first quarter only trailing by 1pt. Manitoba pushed its lead to 12 points at the half and continued to increase their lead on the young Team Alberta squad. This game proved to be a great learning lesson for Alberta as Manitoba was very big inside, forcing Alberta to play a much tougher style of play. The final contest of the weekend saw the rematch of Team Alberta vs. Team Saskatchewan, this game proved to be very different from the previous meeting as both teams battled back and forth throughout the contest. It would be Saskatchewan who would find itself with a slim 4 pt lead with 2 minutes left in the game, Alberta missed a crucial 3pt look and had to foul trying to extend the game. Alberta ended up losing by 8pts after the foul shooting contest but huge progress was made during the weekend.
Next action for Alberta is a weekend training camp in Edmonton followed by a 4 day camp in Lloydminster prepping for the Western Canadian Championships
